RIVIERA MAYA HISTORY

The Riviera Maya was originally called the “Cancun-Tulum corridor,” but in 1999, it was renamed as the Riviera Maya located south of Cancun, Mexico. It straddles the coastal Federal Highway 307, along the Caribbean coastline of the state of Quintana Roo.

The Riviera Maya is famous for its large scale all-inclusive resorts and a historical tourism base of smaller boutique hotels as well as the many fine-dining restaurants available near the beaches.

Archeological sites are the most visited locations, such as Tulum on the coast as well as Chichen Itza, and Coba located some distance inland.

The mean annual temperature is 24-25 °C (75-77 °F).  The climate is dominated by a rainy season from May through November. Within the dry season, there is a period dominated by northerly winds, called El Norte, which usually occurs in January and February.

Explore the world’s second-largest barrier reef and the crystal-clear waters of Mexico’s Caribbean Sea from the new Mayakoba Dive & Water Sports Center. Our knowledgeable, certified instructors offer excursions for divers and water sports enthusiasts of all abilities, including dive training, certification or continued education to develop skills, as well as top-of-the-line equipment and facilities.

ACTIVITIES – ON LAND

Nature Trails: Set off on foot or by bike to explore 2.5 miles or four kilometers of nature trails, seamlessly connecting resort offerings and wind through the lush mangrove forests and around the El Camaleon Golf Course.

Cenote El Burrodromo: A stunning geological feature common the Riviera Maya and formed millions of years ago, Cenote El Burrodromo is a natural cave filled with crystal clear water. A guide must accompany the guest.

El Pueblito: The town square of El Pueblito, or “Little Village,” is a traditional Mexican plaza in the heart of Mayakoba, featuring colorful, mission-style architecture, authentic cuisine, farmers’ markets, cooking classes, live music, and boutique shopping.
