New Year New You. Simple steps to Wellness in 2023

As we enter 2023, with all its optimism, focusing on wellness is often at the core of what we hope for in every new year. While putting aside bad habits and negative influences, there are some relatively simple steps that are certain to improve your physical and mental wellness. Here are a few important and easily achievable steps that will guide you to a healthier you in the new year.

What can you do to begin a wellness routine?

Begin with getting more sleep. A good night’s sleep is fundamental to any wellness regime. Sleep can increase your daytime productivity, improve your immune system, minimize weight gain, improve your memory, and keep you in a better mood throughout your day. Proper sleep habits are also vital to your brain function and can strengthen your heart. For most healthy adults, seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep is recommended. It’s also important to be consistent with your sleep schedule every day, including weekends.

Next, focus on eating more healthy meals. While many people associate eating healthy with dieting, the two are not necessarily the same. While weight loss is one benefit of healthy eating, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Healthy eating has many other benefits, including building bone strength, protecting your heart, preventing diseases like diabetes and cancer, and improving your overall mental wellness. Healthy eating habits can be as simple as replacing or reducing foods that contain trans fats, added salt, and sugar with more nutritious lean proteins, whole grains, healthy fats, and fruits and vegetables of any kind. Include bright-colored foods in most meals, and you’ll be on your way to a healthier new you.

Of course, no journey to a new you would be complete without adding some exercise to your daily life. Exercise can be the single best way to improve not only your physical health but, more importantly, your mental health. Exercise is known to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while improving your memory, your overall mood, boosting your self-confidence, and increasing your brain function. For those that currently don’t exercise regularly, start with short walks, lifting light weights, and enjoying more physically active hobbies like golf, swimming, hiking, tennis, yoga, cycling, and dancing. As you begin to recognize the benefits, you’ll find that exercise time will become one of the most enjoyable parts of your day.

Last but certainly not least, reduce stress. Stress is known to be a major factor in many serious health issues, including heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, stroke, and diabetes. Reducing stress can be challenging, but it can also bring you a great level of enjoyment, and that’s the key to reducing stress. In addition to diet, sleep, and exercise, doing the things that you enjoy most is a significant factor in reducing your overall stress. Plan a spa day, play a round of golf, spend time with family and friends, take a vacation, see a concert or play, play a musical instrument, or just have a good laugh. Doing these things that make you happy, is the key to relieving negative stress. While we all have hectic and demanding jobs and careers, disconnecting from them for a while and enjoying the simple things in life is certain to result in a “new you” in the “new year.”
