Purple, Green, and White for International Women’s Day 2023

With its roots dating back to March 8th, 1857, when a group of over 15,000 female textile workers in New York City protested what they considered unfair working conditions and unequal rights for women, International Women’s Day has since become a global recess celebrating women’s achievements and progress in gender equality by recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world.

One of the most visible ways this day is celebrated is the usage of the color purple, the official color, representing justice and dignity, and with green and white, it represents the feminist movement. By wearing these colors on this day, women join together in solidary and call for continued gender parity.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.” This theme is aligned with the United Nations, which recognizes and celebrates women and girls at the forefront in advancing technology and digital education. It is hoped this theme will shed light on the importance of protecting women’s rights in the digital world and bring attention to online gender-based violence. The United Nations plans to celebrate International Women’s Day by hosting a major event at its headquarters in New York from March 6-17, 2023. This global event will bring together technology professionals, innovators, online entrepreneurs, and equality activists to provide a platform to address the need to improve access to digital tools. The event will include a high-level panel discussion that can be viewed online throughout the world.

One of the most important aspects of International Women’s Day is the singular voice that comes from the collective efforts of all women. This type of group effort and shared ownership for advancing gender parity is what makes International Women’s Day impactful. Gloria Steinem, world-renowned feminist, journalist, and activist, is quoted as saying, “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.” So this year, make International Women’s Day your day by breaking out your best purple, green and white and joining this global effort to bring positive changes and continued equality for women.
